I have a DVD disk that my friend made for me of a performance I had - I want it saved on my computer as a video file. How can I do it?

One easy method of capturing any home made video burned to disk into a video file is to have a video capture card installed on the system. When going to view the video there on an external dvd player you would simply patch the player to the capture device and start recording when the disk was played. You would be capturing live from the playback there. The length of the video will determine the size of the file. Make sure you have plenty of drive space availble since videos can run into the gigabytes there fast.

Is there a way I can copy the dvd to my computer and convert it to something I can watch and edit? I would prefer to do it that way if possible.

Anything that will simply copy files from the disk will be in the various segments and need reassembly by a player there. That goes into mounting a virtual drive that way. By direct capture you create an mpeg II file playable with most types including Windows Media Player 10 and 11. Superdvd player, PowerDVD(far better retail), and others.
