DVD Encoding

Why does it take so long for the DVD encoding process to take place. What exactly is going on at that time and is there anything I can do to speed up that process. Will different programs encode different or faster than others?

It all depends on the processor you are running and how much memory you have installed.

well I am running an AMD dual core that pushes 2210mhz and I have 4gb memory. I would figure this is where having a board maxed out is handy. I could only imagine running 24gb memory with the top of the line processor. I thought I had a decent setup and it matches an average computer these days. To bad this ugly motherboard cant support more than 4gb.

How long is it taking you? Shouldn't take longer than say 30-40 minutes. What software are you using?

Thats right on the dot. Takes exactly about 30-40 minutes. But thats like 20 minutes to long in my mind. But I am new to making my own DVD's so it just something I need to get use to. I have really only done this with music. Can I use a DVD disc to burn music onto to work in a dvd player. They have an xtra 40 mins on the disc's so I figure I can fit 2 cd's on one for the most part.

More ram doesn't help dvd encoding much anyway, so forget the more ram idea, its all about raw cpu power.

What exactly do you mean by encoding? are you taking a video and convertin it into mpeg2?

Or taking a vid thats in mpeg2 and then converting to another file?
