DVD Freeze

This may be a common problem which has been sorted on the Forum many times...forgive me if that is so.

I have a XP Pro + SP2 system with 200gig HD
512 meg of Ram
1.7 Pentium 4
ATI Radeon 7000 Graphic card

When I first built my computer the DVD played films etc with no problems using power DVD and other players. For quite a while (12 months) I had not used the DVD player. Recently I tried and the computer froze.
Since then I have attempted various things such as uninstalling the players and reinstalling, to no avail. The only thing I haven't done and I would prefer not too is a clean XP install. The computer otherwise is working very well without any other problems.
Recently I introduced a DVD writer but it has the same problem. Both of the drives do everything they are capable of.....except play DVD's.

I would be very grateful if someone can help

I have found out this evening (with the help of a past thread) that by uninstalling SP2 the DVD now works perfectly.

Does that mean that I can't use SP2 and play DVD's?

Could it mean that if I reinstall it will be OK?

Or is there a file in SP2 which I can take out to make it work?

Has anyone any experience on this problem?

I didn't have any problems with my SP2. However, I run windows with a clean install and SP2. If it's important to you to run SP2, which I recomend, and play DVDs I would recommend a fresh install. Only install windows and SP2, then other progams

For your information:-

I reinstalled SP2. My DVD worked great. So by uninstallimg and reinstalling SP2 my problem was fixed. Fantastic!
