DVD gone MIA!

The last few days my DVD writer has been going MIA on start up and gradually getting harder to find. At first all I needed to do was reboot, when that stopped working I then went to the control panel and resetting Nero burnrights.
Then that stopped working leading me to putting the installation CD into DVD, even though the computer wasn’t reading the device, it worked.
Now nothing is getting the dumbass thing working! The DVD Writer is a Samsung SH-S182D
Could this be Nero’s way of getting one to upgrade the Nero software?
Any help in solving the mystery of the lost DVD would be greatly appreciated.

P.S.Reading other posts in this field, I’m getting the impression I might not be getting power to the device because the computer is not detecting it? Anyone got any thoughts on this?

What do you mean by lost DVD? You also state that you put the cd in there and that worked also?

Is the DVD player showing up as a cd player in My computer? That happens quite often actually. Especially if you tried to burn data to a dvd by trying to burn directly with windows. I've seen people freak out because there dvd drive is "gone" and all that is recognized is a cd drive. Remember WindowsXP doesn't have native DVD burning cababilities as it does cd burning, hence the reason for a program such as Nero. I have a feeling that this is what is happening to you. Atleast by the symptoms that your saying, and ive had 3 clients thus far that had those symptoms and they were simply trying to burn a dvd using only the windows burning tool. You can't do it.

If thats not it, supply me with some more info so i can better diagnose. :D

I open My Computer and the D drive isn't showing up. I haven't burnt anything but my brother may of.
The second time the D drive didn't show up in My Computer I put the Nero CD in the rom and that made it show up but now that isn't working

I got the stupid thing working again, even though the D drive wasn't showing up in My Computer I put the installation CD in the player and went into control panel, then tried to do a repair but it wasn't going to wear that, so then I tried to install, and that started working.

I don't know how familiar you are with the Nero software but I unchecked all the ticks in all the fields; Video music and pictures and let the installation continue and then rebooted after that the D drive was showing again. You got any idea what’s happening here?

This didn't last long, it disappeared on next reboot.

P.S. no one has tried to burn anything with this computer since it was bought about a month ago.
