DVD movie to AVI

Best way of creating an avi movie from a dvd. i have tried many ways and the best way ive found so far is as follows... i use a wondershare dvd ripper platinum but any ripper that can create a vob file (dvd quality copy) should do. i used to create an avi movie by setting the ripper to directly create an avi file from a dvd. this creates an avi movie, normally in letterbox form with hefty black borders. this would be annoying to watch but the superb GOM player(free) can pan & scan this avi movie & bring it up to full screen.this is ok but the file tends to be approx 1.3 gb which is quite large for avi & the quality is only ok. it takes approx 1 hour 50 mins per movie. i now approach converting in a different way....i now set the ripper to create a vob file from the dvd (a large file of 5 gb plus) this output file must go onto your computer hard drive, not an external drive. these large files cannot normally be transfered to an external drive as they are too large & anyway theyre not avi yet. now to convert these large vob files to avi with superb quality & full screen i then put the vob file into the GOM encoder(free at the moment) with the gom encoder set to 960x540. this creates a superb avi movie at less than 1 gb. this method gives a noticeably sharper image too. an added bonus when creating a vob file with the ripper is that it gets through very slight scratches that would normally stop an avi conversion. although this method means handling the file twice its really worth it & is actually somewhat quicker than a direct avi conversion. creating a vob file takes approx 20 mins. and a vob file takes approx 50 mins to run through the gom encoder. also you can load the gom encoder with 10 vob files & let it work overnight.!!!...one last word of advice, especially when working with the wondershare dvd ripper platinum...always check the vob file is FULL length(check beginning middle & end) and also check that the vob file is in english language as this ripper sometimes has the annoying habit of creating files in a foriegn language.after the avi movie is finished & checked...i then delete the vob file....hope this is of help to you & any other methods of creating avi files that you may have would be most welcome....robert
