DVD playback is screwy

So I've had my dvd drive (NEC 3540A) for a few months now and I finally started to actually use it. Well when I try to play a dvd it comes up distorted. I've tried windows media and Nvidia's, but really it doesn't matter which I use. They're both using the same codec anyways. Well I tried to rip a dvd to my drive and make a copy, it went fine. The copy works fine. So my question is, why won't the original play?

it's a matter of copying information versus computng it, like you can copy something written in a foreign language without understanding what you're writing

but the thing is, my DVD drive, the same dvd drive, will play that copied information. That's like saying if I copy some chinese, I'll understand what I wrote.

I still think it has something to do with the codecs for the encryption, when you copy a disk you remove the encryption, and tthat's the thing thta will make your playback screwy if you don't have the right codecs for it

but why does a burned copy of the dvd work. If I needed a new codec, it shouldn't work either way.
Um ... there's a few technicalities there (which branch so much i wont get into them) but that might not be true

yes it should because the burned copy uses a diffrent codec than the original
Huh?? DVDs, ripped or otherwise, use MPEG2 at what should be 8Mbit/s (although lower specs exist)

MPEG2 is MPEG2 .. in fact, it's standard.

1. Can u elaborate on "distorted"
2. What DVD software do you use to play it back
3. What firmware revision is your DVD player? You can find otu using Nero InfoTools (or from here)
