DVD Player Clicking Off?

i have a dvd player that seems to play dvd movies fine, but when i try to install software from a dvd i often hear a click, and the dvd player seems unresponsive. sometimes my computer is unresponsive too.

does a data dvd tax the dvd drive more than a movie? does this sound like the dvd drive is shot?

thanks

I totally agree that the drive is most likely going bad. They are cheap these days, try a new one.

replacing the bad dvd drive

i'm trying to re-install windows, and since the dvd drive (drive D) shuts down, i am trying to use my other optical drive (drive E). my computyer does not recognize it. so i unplugged the cable going into the dvd drive (D) and plugged it into my other drive (E). i don't understand why this is apparently a problem. shouldn't my computer now recognize the former E as the new D? or does my computer remember that was a dvd drive and is looking for it specifically? i wouldn't think so, as i erased and partitioned my hard drive, after which the dvd drive with the re-nstall cd quits out on me.

how can i get my computer to recognize my working drive?

You probably need to change the jumper on the drive to either master or cable select.

i unplugged the bad dvd drive, which was the master, i guess. my cable has 2 IDE connectors. i plugged the end one into the cd rom drive. i set the jumper for this cd-rom drive cable connect, then i tried as master.

i am getting the error: LTNDR missing. my windows xp boot cd is in the cd drive. not sure what to do.

btw, do i need to do anything with that little analog audio connector?

Okay, with IDE drivers, it mattes which way the cable is in. my brother has his cable in the wrong way and his HDD constantly clicks... his problem, anyway.

The connector furthest away from the other two needs to be in the motherboard. The middle connector is the slave, the one at the other end is the master. try plugging it in that way.
