when i try to play a dvd on my PC, it plays, but the only player i get sound out of is a program called power DVD. no other program. not even windows media player. you're probably thinkin 'well use power DVD'. i would...except no matter how many times i click, the captions STAY on. which i find annoying. and secondly, the resolution is choppy. not as nice and sharp compared to windows media. so how do i get the sound to work on windows media player? i uninstalled power DVD already. am i just missin somethin simple?

Sounds like you need codec, might wanna have a look at K-Lite Codec.
Thats free or you could download microsoft plugin DVD decoder software from here.
Also be sure to have a look at Understanding video file formats, you might pick up some good info there.
