Hiya, this is my first post on this forum and i have tried looking at other posts to find my answer but i couldnt find anything, basically the problem is this:

I have a laptop which an inbuilt dvd/cd player and rewriter - my computer recognises cds perfectly fine and plays them no problem but whenever I put a dvd in the computer either does nothing at all with no sounds or it makes an extremely loud noise and just spins - the dvd player was working fine a few months ago and became a bit temporental when the laptop got too hot, now it wont work at all - I have downloaded the video codec pack in one of the posts but this failed to resolve

Please help

You probably need to get a new optical drive. Also have you tried clearing the surface of dust etc. It may have a lot of dust built up.

it just seems strange that it will play cds fine but not dvds? i have tried blowing in the slot to clear any dust.....

I had a DVD/CD combo burner in my desktop that simply would not recognize or deal with CD rewriteables. Regular CD-Rs, and any type of DVD you can think of worked just fine, but to CD-RWs, it was dead. Driver replacement, software reinstallation, firmware upgrade, etc. all failed.
The only solution was a new burner.

Had the same problem once, had to replace drive also, worked fine after.
