DVD playing help

I just reinstalled Windows Vista on my laptop and I cannot use Windows Media Player to play DVDs. I open a DVD with WMP and it then closes a few seconds later. I can use VLC but the quality is somewhat grainy.
Any advice enabling me to use WMP or improve VLC will be greatly appreciated.
