dvd rewriter 'encountered a problem'

hi with my dvd rewriter whenever i try to put some data onto a dvd-r (its a dual layer drive) it just says 'windows encountered a problem while trying to copy this file, what do you want windows to do?' ive tried all sorts of files, word documents, music, videos etc and nothing will go on. its not the discs as ive bought 2 differant packs of discs from differant companies, and it cant really b the drive as it burns cd's no problem and i did our recovery disc onto a dvd!!

please help as i am really confused!

ok, firstly i see your using windows burning wizard to burn to your discs. this isnt usually the greatest for compatibility issues, its quite common that windows will not be able to burn certain types to your specific burner.

I would suggest a seperate burning program, Nero is industry standard closely followed by Roxio. These cost money though, im sure there are freee ones, im sure other people can point you in the right direction.

As to this "recovery disc" that you burnt to DVD, did you use windows to do that? and if so what format was it? and what type of DVD did you use? DL?

the DVD i used was a DVD-R from Tesco :P

but still shouldnt i be able to just add files by saying 'copy' then pasting them onto the disc in disc drive?!
 
theoretically, yes, to a certain degree, obviously burning to DVD's and burning to CD's are completely different, windows burning wizard isn't that advanced and might struggle with certain makes and models of burners. I doubt it is a problem with your drive, but to test that out we need to get you a free DVD burning application... I'll go have a scout round now, brb

*EDIT* - ok, im back - try this - http://www.cdburnerxp.se/download.php?latest - i havent used it before but it was top ranked in google under a serch of "free burn software" so i would expect it to work well. Try that out ona blank DVD, try putting some of every file type, music, video, images, documents etc....
