DVD ROM doesn't read DVDs?

I have a Tashiba laptop which in the disk opening reads CD-ROM and also DVD R/RW. But when I try to open a DVD+RW I have inserted, it doesn't read it. It just keeps on 'thinking' by making sounds of reading the DVD but not doing anything. However, it does play DVD movies. The DVD+RW disk dosen't have movies only other types of files I have copied onto.

Do I need to install a software so that it will read DVDs which are not movies? Strangely it does read a DVD+R disk.

HAve you tried DVD-R disks? Please post the model number of your drive. It may not be a +R drive so it may only read -R discs.

Is the disk blank?

the issue shud be with the dvd's and not with the drive. try using the same dvd's in another drive. also check for any scratches on the dv disc.
