dvd-rom issue

ok, my friend just told me that he's having an issue with his dvd-rom drive, it's an ASUS DVD-E616P2 (thats what he wrote, dont know if its correct), ok now, he told me that when he inserts a dvd or a cd it wont spin, it doesnt wanna start spinning, but when he goes into the SAFE mode it spins, so whats the problem here, i couldnt help him cuz i dont know much about optical drives so can u help him?

Not a answer but that is weird, mabe the laser is out and since it doesnt pick up a cd or dvd it doesnt spin up

but he said that it works in SAFE mode, so there is something else wrong
