My 3 year old DVD-ROM stopped working a few days ago. It doesn't read any kind of discs. What should I do? Is it broken?

First thing to do is identify what kind of problem you're having.
If you go into my computer, does it show your dvd drive there?
Was it a gradual problem or did it happen suddenly?

I can see it. But if i put in a cd it says its empty and after a while it dissapears until i restart my computer.
It happened when i started the computer.

I'm not very good at grammar so i hope it makes sense.

What operating system are you using?
Try running the computer in safe mode to see if it works then.

I'm using Windows XP HE and i have allready tried that. It didn't work.

Did this all happen suddenly after you did something?
If not, then your drive is most likely breaking up.

dvd rom drives are mechanical devices they suffer 'wear and tear' like every other mechanical devices and eventually fail sadly. Mine blew after 4 days...that was annoying.

I haven't done anything, it just didn't work when I started my computer.
