DVD+-RW Drive problems

Hi guys,
My DVD burner (AOPEN DUW1608/12x) is acting up, it wont burn dvds but it will burn cds. I installed the latest firmware directly from AOPEN's website. I did create a logical CD drive recently so I was wondering what might cause my problems?!

It's probably a bad DVD lens. There are 2 lenses in the drive that are used, 1 for CDs and 1 for DVDs. In your case, probably the DVD lens is not working properly, probably you'll just have to replace the whole drive... :(

I agree, it sounds like the lens UNLESS the problem started after you installed the firmware. Then I'd say something went wrong with the update... If that's the case, you could try to reflash it with another version...

well, it can't see files on dvds but it can tell a blank dvd from a dvd with something on it. but if it is a dvd with autoplay the autoplay wont happen and it will be treated as a disc with nothing on it but not blank if that makes any sense lol.

if i try to burn a dvd it will either err or it will finish with no errors, if it finishs with no errors the dvd wont work anyways lol.

actually I do hope that it is just the dvd lense bc thats not my fault rite? and i have a full hardware warenty @ staples so i can just take it in.

Heya

I very much doubt that it is anything else but the DVD lens. You may want to try CD cleaning kits. It coul be just dirty. I doubt that it's the firmware at all. Sometimes, lenses simply lose their power. In fact, that is why lenses usually die off. Their intensity goes low making them unable to read data.

okay thanks, i do have a cd cleaning cd ill throw it in and give it a whirl, but will that only clean the cd lens or will it also clean the dvd lens?

didnt work :( although after i updated my firmware i was able to watch a dvd movie, but dvd+r wont read or write when it is suposed to be able to do both, and i authored a dvd+r before and it worked like a dream.

Fair call...

I think that it could possibly do the CD one as well as the DVD. However, teh Cd one is 100% and the DVD one, I really do not know. Perhaps they have a DVD lens cleaner DVD.

mm yeah maybe they do :)

im too lazy to look/spend the money on it tho haha i prefer to just return the dvd burner hahaha

Yes

It's a brand name. They produce SONY drives as well... Now another great burner is the NEC 3520 or even better the NEC 3540. They are cheaper than the competition and perform very well.

A similar thing happened to my DVD burner (Memorex), it used to work fine, but then all of a sudden i couldnt play DVD's or burn DVD's with it. I had to hook it up through USB with an external enclosure. Still, now i can only burn DVD's, CD, when i try and watch a DVD movie, it freezes up every 10 minutes or so, but i can use it for DVD data. Weird.

I also flashed it, but have no idea how to flash it with an older version. Partly because i dont know where to get the older version.

ya, they only have the most recent firmware. And if i got the old one, it wouldnt let me downgrade to an older version.

thats sucky, the website for AOPEN has the last 4 firmware updates and you can use any of them not that that fixed my problem, but now i dont even have an AOPEN i love warenties
