Dvd+rw/dvd-rw

DVD-R is supported by the DVD Forum which consists of a bunch of companies that are involved in dvd development standards.

DVD+R are backed by the DVD+RW Alliance. These formats are not sanctioned by the DVD Forum but several members of the DVD+RW Alliance are also members of the DVD Forum.

Oddly enough, my DVD-Recorder(like a VCR...) supports DVD+R, DVD-R, DVD-RW, and DVD-RAM. It does NOT support DVD+RW. Strange huh? And it's even printed on the unit that it doesn't support this...

Personally, I tend to stick with DVD-R and -RW's. For the most part, they do seem to be the most compatable with other drives. However, I have seen some drives that can only read "+" media...

The DVD movies that you buy are DVD-R, which is the reason for booktyping +Rs. It keeps anything you burn as close to the original as possible.

until a few years ago, drives didn't have the capability to bitset dvd+r discs, so dvd-r was more compatible with standalones.

Now with bitsetting, dvd+r is the media of choice.
