dvd wont play on home player but ok on pc

This is borderline what we can't talk about seeing as you didn't say what the movies were. Soo, I'll just say the format is very specfic. You can't just burn any random video to a DVD and expect it to play on any DVD-Player. Computers are usualy more forgiving than DVD players too, when the settings aren't quite to the standards. Finally, I've found a few DVD-Players that just plain wouldn't read burnt DVDs. Usally, the cheaper it is, the better it reads burnt disks.

Like said above, some dvd players don't support some formats, and even burned discs. It should say on your DVD player if it will support Divx,mp3(audio) etc. etc. I know that my RCA Drc247N plays most media files etc. ,but some of my older players don't. (Xbox, and Xbox 360 don't play media files either I believe).

DVD-R is generally the most compatible format to burn DVDs. It is always wise to burn at a slow speed (2x or 4x) Burning at max speed can cause errors and make DVD players unable to read, or read with errors (video corruption).
Computers are VERY forgiving with burned DVDs, you can get almost any DVD burned in various odd ways to play in a computer, hell you can directly play the .VOB (DVD video format) files themselves if the software supports VOB format.

You could just be unlucky and have a DVD player that doesnt like the particular medium you're burning too. For example, my DVD player will play verbatium DVD-R's just fine however if I use a cheaper DVD-R pack such as CDR-Media DVD-R's, it wont read them. Try using a different medium / make of DVD-R.

But indeed, what file format are you burning to DVD-R? .iso, .avi, .mpg? If an iso then you are using the correct image burning features with Nero right? As if not you could just be burning the data files and not the actual movie itself.

hi thanx for getting back but still no wiser ive even gone out and got other discs but dvd player says wrong disc format can you help with any other advise

What file extension is at the end of the file your burning with Nero? e.g. .iso, .rar, .tar, .avi

The only thing I can suggest is trying a different convert program / application and/or trying to burn with Nero using different options. You might want to try DVD-R's instead of Xvids/Div-X's as they're specifically designed for DVD players.

(This isnt treading on any legal toes is it? As I'm not exactly telling her what or where to download from, simply what format is the correct one)

it is dvd-r/+r...i am using it was divx convertor+vso...i was converting with think i should give up as i have wasted so many discs.

i have a strange case (on the dvd drive i have on my computer) where i can play a really old jackie chan movie FROM CHINA, but i cant play more popular dvds...it seems to work well with older dvds, but it could also be the region. some dvd players will only play region specific dvds.
