DVD works for movies, not data (games)

Hello I'm new here and can't figure this out by myself.

My DVD ROM is generic, I used Everest home edition to figure out it's a Afree IDE DVD ROM 16X.

I've never had a problem with it before, movies work great. Recently I bought 2 games on DVD (always had cd versions before). These are legitamate as I do not pirate software.

Autorun seems to start the install, but then it just stops with various error messages. Sometimes nothing happens, as if I didn't click install.

Other times I get Setup.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. Sorry for the incovenience.

I read the debug stuff and there's a file with gibberish I don't understand and saves it C:\DOCUME~1\user\LOCALS~1\Temp\c6a4_appcompat.txt

I wouldn't post it here because it's too long unless someone wants to try to decipher.

I read about "flashing firmware" but don't know what version or program to use. I would update the driver but couldn't find anything for Afree.

Any ideas or advice would be appreciated.

Thank you!

Anyone?

I can't figure this out and it's driving me crazy. The games are Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion and Tomb Raider Legends. These are the 1st PC DVD games I've owned. Everything else has been CD.

I assume its the DVD drive and not games because they both won't install?

I have all required specs for the games, plenty of hard drive space. Past games installed fine from CD. It just won't install/autorun, or if it does start it fails with errors. DVD movies play fine.

I ain't a smart man but I would think uninstall then reload driver, but I don't know what driver to use for this "generic" DVD ROM 16x. Afree has nothing that I can find.

I have gone into device managers, uninstalled, then let windows plug and play put it back in. I allow it to find an updated driver from windows but it doesn't find anything.

Specs:
Window XP Pro SP 2.
FX-53
GT6800
1024 RAM
Afree IDE DVD ROM 16x
Plextor CD R PX-W5224A
Creative Audigy 2 ZS

Thanks.

Well good news.

I put it in my laptop DVD (which works fine), then shared that on my network, allowed me to install on desktop.

I still have the problem with my desktop DVD ROM.

Any ideas on fixing it (desktop DVD) would still be appreciated thanks!!

My mood is much better now.

Thanks Jon Boy.

I paid for the driver magician (before you ever recommended it) and it didn't recognize or do anything for the DVD ROM :(

My thinking was to flash firmware for a "similar" device (same specs on DVD ROM) but I don't know what would be compatable, Afree seems to have nothing.

Thanks for replies!

elmarcorulz that site looks promising. I will check it out and see what they recommend.

If flashing firmware fails I'll pull out the checkbook and get a new one. Funny I've had this computer for 3 years and never knew anything was wrong with it.
Once the game is installed it's fine, when I start game it recognizes that the DVD is in the drive and plays, just won't install from it. Strange.

Danke
