dvi to hdmi not working

I have a Polaroid 19" 1911-TLXB LCD TV and I am trying to hook up my older desktop (Dell Optiplex GX110 running win XP pro sp3). The graphics card is a nvidia GeForce4 MX 4000 PCI (not express). The card has 1 VGA 1 DVI and 1 S-Video. I wanted to use the DVI to go to the TV (which will be the main monitor) and the s-video for a cheap projector i don't use very often. my TV only has one VGA that i wanted to save for my new laptops.

I bought a DVI to HDMI cable (the cable says high-speed hdmi on it). It takes it a minute to recognize it when i plug it in, but once it does it correctly identifies it as Polaroid 1911-tlxb, but the t.v. never shows anything. I have tried many different configurations and the computer thinks its outputting to the TV but the TV never shows anything.

I have tried all resolutions and turning the colors down to 8 and 16 bit but nothing even flickers on the hdmi. The VGA is also plugged into the TV which i haven't had any problems with.

any suggestions would be appreciated.

What operating system are you using?

I tried something similar with my laptop to a Vizio flatscreen. What I did was to go to the desktop screen, right click and go to Properties, then go to the Settings tab. You'll see two monitor screens in the view box marked 1 and 2. While your laptop is hooked to the tv try clicking the 2 monitor and then clicking the box next to this phrase "extend video to this monitor". My laptop uses Window Xp.

Also, check to see if your tv screen is set for pc, hdmi, camera, or av.

I have tried the extended desktop (and its a desktop with more than 2 video outs) and again the computer thinks its working but its not.

On my Vizio, there are at least 3 different areas of hooking up to the tv. Each has its own audio and video input channels. Your tv might be the same. It's relative to the channel you choose for picture. For example, choose AV if you're connected to the AV section. Each section is related to the picture channel selections. When I mention Channels, I'm referring to the picture type (for example, HDMI versus AV) and not the physical channel of a tv station.

my tv only has one hdmi port and i am selecting hdmi, i know this is the right port because i tried a blue ray player on it and it worked.

I have a Vizio SV472XVT and am trying to use HDMI-3 which has a separate audio input jack. When I connect this to the Nvidia MX4000, the Nvidia recognizes the Vizio but the screen is always blank with the words "No Signal". I can hook the MX4000 to a Dynex LCD 19" and get a picture using the MX4000 no problem. I can also run an HDMI cable from an old computer using an Intel MB D815eea2 which has a DVI output. This will generate a picture on the Vizio with no problem. I just can't get the Nvidia to generate a picture on the Vizio.
