DVI to VGA, Help >_>

I recently purchased a new computer that has an NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTS for a video card, and I noticed that it only had DVI ports.

Luckily I had a DVI to VGA converter lying around the house for no particular reason and I had to use it for my VGA cord that goes to my screen.

I don't have a DVI cord that connects to my screen, and I was wondering if using this converter has any downsides to it, quality-wise.

it sure does. using the converter forces the DVI to output an analog signal. if your monitor supports DVI, definitely get a DVI cable. i definitely noticed a difference
 
The quality difference may or may not be apparent, it depends on the monitor and the individual eye. But like Cleric said, if your monitor supports DVI then get a DVI cord. There's no reason not to have the best image quality, even if it's not that noticeable. ;)
 
Dont worry, your not missing out unless you have a gigantic monitor with a huge resolution. Even on my 22" LCD @ 1680x1050 I didnt notice a difference when I switched. Theres no reason to buy a new monitor just for DVI, but if it supports it (I know yours doesnt, but i'm speaking in general), then get a DVI cable.
 
the only difference in quality between DVI and VGA would depend on the quality of the analog to digital converter in the monitor.

using DVI simply bypasses the need for the extra converter between the computer and the display
