It could be your cd drive died on you, or there is some conflict with the drivers.
Try holding the windows and pause break key and when the window pops up click on hardware. then click on device manager. If you see any yellow or red icons next to your cd devices, double click on the cd devices and right click on property's. Read any messages that show up. If it says it is not working properly, then uninstall the device by right clicking on the device and clicking uninstall. Reboot and see if it reinstalls the drivers. If it does then you should be ok. If not then that drive is probably dead and you need to install a new one. They are very cheap and easy to install, so don't get worried about it.
If it is dead come back here and we can walk you through how to install a new one.
Another thing, it could be the software you are using to burn your cd/dvd's. You might try reinstalling the software. Can you play cd's from that drive? Are you only getting that message when you try to burn?
If you are trying to use windows burning software, I don't think it will work with DVD's so you might have to install some aftermarket software to burn DVD's
