E6300 OC, Only up to 2387MHz? Need advice...

OK, I have a 965P-DS3 MOBO, an E6300 CPU (With the Big Typhoon), 2GB of Corsair DDR2-800 XMS2 RAM, a Geforce 7900GS GPU and a good PSU for it all. Thing is, I know that the E6300 Has the possibility of OC'ing to 3GHz, thing is, it won't. I have it in the BIOS on Auto to raise the volages to anything in the computer to stabilize it power-wise, I have gotten to 2.38GHz from its stock 1.84GHz, but I want 3GHz. I havent tried but do I need to raise my RAM speed to accomidate a little for the CPU overclocking?

So far have you only raised the bus?

Most likely your memory is bottlenecking, so try lowering the divider or set higher timings to the RAM. Or you can raise the voltage of it.

OK, when you say higher timings, do ou mean better timings or not as good timings? (EX: 4-4-5-6 ----> 5-4-6-6, or do you mean like 4-4-5-6 ---->3-3-4-5??? I dont mean those timings specifically, just as an example, 1st or second which kind do you mean by higher timings???

Lower the speed of your memory so that it does not surpass 800mhz, otherwise you may run into issues. Other than manually raise voltage when needed and when finished lower it as much as you can. These intels OC like a mofo :-P, so it is certainly within reason to get it too 3 or so, but don't be dissappointed with anything you can get. You are getting more for free, technically.

1. Lower the memory divider (ie, make it run at 667mhz instead of 800mhz if it was running at stock speeds), then raise the memory timings.
2. Never let the motherboard auto raise the voltages. First off, it's dangerous (the motherbaord might raise them too high), and secondly, if you get to 3Ghz, you won't know what Voltage is the minimum you can use. The key is to get the voltages as low as possible.

^^^ How do I know what to look for? I have been OC'ing for 2 years now, but I just want to make sure everything is right. In my BOIS I see no option for timing, and I think there is something called the divider in there too, just not sure what it is. And if the voltage is too low will I not be able to power up my computer?

Edit- I found something called the system memorie multiplyer, is that the same as the "memory divider"? If it is it show that I can take it from its speed of 950MHz down to 850MHz or 650MHz. Is this what I need to do?

Look for a setting called memory config, thats where you can lower the timings.

And for starters, see how high you can raise the speed on stock voltage (not auto), then slowly increase it until it becomes stable.

Higher voltage = more heat, and shorter lifespan of the CPU.

Above 'Memory Frequency (Mhz)' you will have an option 'System Memory Multiplier'. Reduce this until the Memory Frequency is below the stock settings of your RAM.

OK, so far I have gotten to 2.079GHz, then it restarted from the BIOS and made 6 really fast beeps and shut down and restarted again, then shut down and restarted again (all by itself) then booted up fine and even went the the speed (2.079GHz) That I had just set it to moments ago. Is this the sign that I need to up the voltage by 0.025V now?

I own this very board. I have my E6300 running stable @ 3.0 Ghz.

A few questions:

1) You know you have to press Ctrl + F1 to access advanced features of the BIOS, such as memory timings, right? If not, I suggest you read through the user manual.

2) Flash the BIOS to the latest version (F9), available for download on the Gigabyte website. It will allow for a much stabler overclock. Link: http://tw.giga-byte.com/Support/Motherboard/BIOS_Model.aspx?ProductID=2314 You can use @BIOS ( http://tw.giga-byte.com/FileList/NewTech/old_motherboard_newtech/tech_a_bios.htm ) to update it through Windows.

3) To get to speeds of 3.0 Ghz and beyond, you're going to have to raise the MCH volatge 0.1v. Otherwise you're not going to get anywhere. I suggest you do that now. However, you are also going to need to point a fan over the NorthBridge, otherwise it'll start to get very hot.

4)
Try these settings:

  • CPU FSB: 400
  • Memory multi: 2.0
  • Memory timings: 5 - 5 - 5 - 15
  • RAM Voltage: +0.1 or +0.2v. Default is set to 1.8v. You will need to raise it according to how much voltage your RAM requires. I would recommend you add 0.2v's for now. It should be fine, since I have the same RAM as you, but the 667Mhz type.
    MCH Voltage: +0.1v

That should set you up fine. Atleast, it does for me.

I suppose the only way is to find out. Rev 2 of what, though? The motherboard or CPU? My CPU stepping is B2, and my motherboard Rev is C1 (from CPUz).

MOBO rev 2. I found the BOIS on the web site and got that one. I installed it and when restarting it boot up and restart about 7 times then booted up normally and set all my BIOS changes to normal...Is that supposed to happen?

No, but be thankful it is working ok now. It is, right?

Try doing the settings I posted earlier. Let me know how you get on. I'll be browsing here for the next 30 mins or so.

:)
