E6400 Non-BIOS overclocking?

Can anyone recommend an easy-to-use non-BIOS overclocking program? I've never overclocked a chip before and the BIOS scares me :P (well, unless I'm setting the time..)

Have seen people get up to 3.0GHz on stock cooling fine, and I'm hoping to hit around 2.7 in a P180 on stock cooling (at the moment).
 
You could use ClockGen, you'd have to find your ICS number, though. I would suggest sticking with the BIOS overclocking, though, because it is a much more stable overclock, and you don't have to manually overclock your computer everytime you start it, like you have to do with ClockGen. Just raise the FSB in the BIOS by 5 Mhz each time, reboot, run SuperPi 1M, and keep on for a while. Once you get around 2.7, you should stop and run dual Prime95 programs for around 12 hours, then if it is stable, keep upping the FSB. You should be able to hit 3.0 easily.
 
And by upping the FSB by say 5MHz, and my multiplier is locked to 8 I think.. that raises it by 40MHz, yeah?

We're all n00bs at some stage.

It's extremely simple really.

Just raise the FSB 5 Mhz each time. I would say you could get to 3.0 Ghz with only having to change the FSB and no volatges.

Right now, your Clock Freq. is 2.13 Ghz, right? So your FSB is set at 266 Mhz. Raise it to 270 Mhz. I can GUARANTEE nothing bad will happen. It will boot perfectly fine, and your clock speed should be 2.16 Ghz (30 Mhz higher). Then raise it to 275 Mhz. Repeat the process until you get to around 300 Mhz.

Then report back here with how it went.

By the way, before you do it, what is your memory multiplier set to?

Right now I have mine OC'ed to 2.2 ghz and I have raised the voltage ever so slightly. My memory is now at 822 (well 411) ddr2, The only options it gives me in the multipliers for memory lowers it all the way down to 600 something I don;t remember. Whats the highest the memory can get before I should back off.

Well, I have had mine (rated at 677 Mhz) running at 1020 Mhz before (ok, so it was unstable, but it still worked :P). I would say you are safe at 1000 easily. But you will have to up the vDimm a little (mine is on 2.0v from 1.9v).
 
5-6-6-20 is my latency, will I suffer significant memory speed from overclocking my CPU like this?

I have read I should be able to access more specific memory adjustments in BIOS by hitting ctrl-F1 in MIT mode in my bios with this board but I cannot, do I have a different version. Does anyone know how to access this?

Also, I went up to 2.2 and ran a stress test with Prime95, it stopped because it detected hardware failure, I restarted and my mobo went back to it's default setting. Even after I bumped up the voltage a bit. I brought it back up to 2.16 and now it seems to be working fine. Did I just take to large of a step up. 32MHZ. SUggestions, comments please.

Hmmm, that is extremely weird. 2.2 Ghz is nothing for a CPU. I have a feeling it's your RAM. What is the voltage your RAM should be running at?

My RAM should be running on 1.9, but the BIOS sets itself to run on 1.8v default. Are you undervolting your RAM?
 
That may be it, I only have the options to add voltage not to select the voltage where can I find out what voltage is being used now.

do you have AIM?

Oddly enough too, cpuz says my memory is runny at different latency's and speed's....

My RAM is 2GB Corsair XMS2 800MHz 5-5-5-12-C5. I'm assuming that'll be fine?

Edit// so, here's what I do:

Raise FSB to 270MHz
Boot up and it'll work fine
Go back to BIOS
Raise FSB to 275MHz
Boot up and then what do I do?
Assuming everything works fine, go back to BIOS
Raise FSB to 280MHz

etc etc, until I get to 300 yeah? and then... confusion? :P

Yeah, go to 300 Mhz, in 5 Mhz increments, making sure you manage to boot to windows safely. Once you hit the 300 Mhz FSB mark, check your temps. You should be fine.

Also, what would be cool is to record your SuperPi 1M results throughout your overclocking stages. So, every time you have gone up 30 Mhz (in 5 Mhz increments), do a SuperPi and see how much of a performace increase you get (that's optional lol :P).

Set your memory multiplier to 2.0 by the way. ;) Once we get past 400 Mhz FSB, you'll need it as low as possible to stop RAM instability. :) Oh, and by the way, leetkyle, is this your RAM: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820145590

If so, bump up your vDimm +1.0. It should be operating at 1.9v ;)

Yes. That's probably why you weren't doing very well. You're undervolting and overclocking at the same time :P

I was able to figure put how to get into the specific RAM info, should I change any of this or leave it to auto.

And do you have AIM, so I can bother you in real time, lol.

Yeah, press Ctrl + F1 and set it to 5 -5 - 5 - 12. 1.9v and you should be ready to go.

Oh, and I have MSN Messenger (check my profile ;)).

Also set the Memory Multiplier to 2.0 :)
