E8400 Temperature Problem

I recently got my E8400 and a new mobo(P35-DS3). So I took out the ol' 4600+ x2 and the mobo and put the new stuff in. Connected it and all that. So I boot it up into the bios and go looking around for anything that needs changing. I see that my CPU temp is 105 degrees! YIKES! I thought. So I shut it down straight away. took the panel of the case off touched the heatsink and its colder than room temperature.I googled it and I see numerous people with my problem.I booted it up again into windows uninstalled the AMD drivers and installed the new ones, thinking alot of people are having this problem so I kept going.The next day I got home from school and boot it up seems a little slower than my athlon.I updated the bios to the latest one. I played COD4 and sure enough around 2-4 mins in my computer shuts down. I turned it on and went into the bios 115 degrees! Around five seconds later it shutdown again. So I waited till it cooled down. I ran coretemps and found that it was only running at 2 Ghz. But windows says different (3 Ghz).

So does any body know a work around for this? Has intel released anything? I haven't found anything yet. This is my first intel expierence and I am a bit disappointed right now.:(I havent overclocked it at all or used a third party heat sink so my warrenty should cover it right?

Also I'm thinking I should disable the thermal settings so it doesn't underclock it anymore.

 
Alot of us are having this problem, but your temps seem... crazy off..

What heatsink are you using, stock? sure its seated correctly?

its possible that IF it is reporting the temps wrong that the bios reads its at the "max" temp and then decides to shut the computer down.

I beleive there is an option in bios to disable that.

about the 2ghz, its downclocking. To make that stop, disable C1E and EIST
 
I tried that but it still randomly shuts off and wont even boot with those settings you recommended. It can only boot at 2.0 Ghz.So far.:(
 
assuming you properly applied thermal paste (not using the dry stuff pre applied by intel) and seated the heat sink push pins properly (check to see all 4 push pins went through the mobo) then i'm guessing the temperature probe on the motherboard may be broken.

I RMA'd my E8400 due to a similar problem. Newegg tried to charge me a restocking fee but I bitched at them and got it waived.

Mine was the core temps though. If I understand correctly, the core temps are the sensors in the processor and the processor temp is the sensor in the motherboard.

If you're positive the heatsink is on properly and your temps are not actually 100+C, I'd RMA the motherboard for sure.

Personally, I'd RMA the processor with it, but that's just me.
 
the cpu core temps is also a good reason. got a spare cpu lying around? try using it to rule out the cpu or mobo
 
I'm using the stock heatsink and the pre applied paste for know, I know its probably the worst (with the exception of no heatsink!:P) but I still would have thought that it would boot at the advertised specs...

I'll probably RMA the CPU tomorrow when I have time. Do you really think I should RMA the motherboard too?

I really don't see why anything like this should happen, wouldn't they have tested them before they released them?
 
you're using the pre-applied goop. don't you have any thermal paste?
have you removed the mobo to see if all 4 push pins are through?

before rma-ing anything i'd rule out the simple things first unless you like playing guessing games
 
Nup no thermal paste what so ever. I might pick some up If I RMA it. I've actually got it to boot at 3 Ghz right now. Not sure if its stable though. I'll check those 4 pins now.

EDIT: 4 pins couldn't be more stable. Didn't move half a millimetre.
I got it to play call of duty 4 for a couple a bit but at less than two minutes in it starts going all laggy. I've tried creating a server and blowing up a couple of cars and it lags still so its not a ping problem there. But it might have been clocked down to 2 Ghz then though, im not sure. I can't get it to 3 Ghz, before it must have been 2.:(

Drip some water on your heatsink. If it boils instantly, the temperature isn't lying. If not, you probably just shorted your mobo so you have a problem anyway.

(just kidding, please don't do this)

Why aren't you using any thermal paste??
 
I thought some stock paste would come with the CPU, but it turns out that it didn't. But there was that pre applied stuff so I thought that for know I'd keep it at stock and maybe overclock it when I get a better HSF and better paste. Also the instructions say nothing about thermal paste.
 
The stuff on the bottom is the pre applied paste, i'm not sure what to tell you.

And your positive its seated correctly?
 
you should have bought a new case to instaal your new mobo and processor on it but do not worry anyway cause this new generation of intel processors can adorn high tempratures .
 
OK well we rang the guy and he said bring your PC in so naturally I did. He opens the case first thing he says that the HSF isn't plugged in right! Now my dad and I put the heatsink on and off a couple of times but couldn't make it go in any further before and it wasn't rattling around or anything and seemed to be fine. So he took it out played with one of the pins for around 5 - 10 minutes and vollia!He said I was REALLY lucky that I didn't fry it. Shows how much of a noob I am:rolleyes:.... Now its running stable at 3 Ghz with PC wizard saying that my cores are around 33 degrees and the CPU to be 44 degrees and core temps saying they're 50-54. I guess PC wizard would be more accurate then. Strangely enough everst thinks my CPU's an Xeon pentiumn 3 that's got a 7 times multiplier and a 429Mhz FSB.:D

Thanks for everyones help! I'm really grateful. Your all good people.:) If its ever running hot at 100 degrees again i'll just tip some water on it and see if it boils!
