E8500 Overclock Question

Compequip

New Member
So I just built my first comp. and then decided to take it to a local shop to have them finish up for me. Here is my question, they asked if I wanted to OC and I said sure. They told me they changed my multiplier and that was all. They didn't have to change the voltage. They ran it on I believe it was CPU-Z to get a rating. They showed it to me and my machine is running at 4.0 is this a good stable number to run at? They said he ran it for a day and a half and it ran perfect, and didn't run hot. They said the E8500 runs these numbers without any issues. That if I wanted to mess with it later I could and make it run faster, but to just be careful especially seeing I don't no what I'm doing. My comp is running on air....

If you're already at 4GHz, I wouldn't bother screwing around with it any more, as that's really close to that CPUs ceiling and you can't get a lot more performance out of it, even the little you could get out of it wouldn't be noticeable and you'd have to bump up the voltage to get there. Voltage increase alone results in exponential increase of heat production, and topped up with the higher clockspeed the thing is going to get REALLY sweaty. I would leave it there... 4GHz for an 8xxx is excellent, there's no need for more.

Either you misunderstood them, or they don't know what they are talking about. You can not raise the multiplier on the E8500, all you can do is raise the FSB. 4GHz is really pushing it, I would be sure that it is fully stress tested.

I probably misunderstood, but I no he said something about the multiplier being 9.5 and he went into the bios and bumped it up and didn't touch the voltage. They said they tested it and it was running perfect, he was quite impressed with the performace. How do you stess test, I'll do it myself. Go to a website and d/l something? Thanks, and yes I saw it, they d/l the cpu-z and it showed something like E8500 3.16 running 4096 I think. I'll d/l and pull it up again. They said this was a validation or something. How do I copy and save so I can show you guys.

Did they say if they ran and stability tests, or stress test to see if its stable?

If its at 4.0, thats a good day-to-day speed. I wouldn't change it.

I'm not sure, but he said that they were checking to make sure it was stable. So I'm assuming, yes. I'm gonna long on the other comp now and post with my validation, give me a minute.

O.K. check it out....

And while your looking at this can anyone tell me why next to my memory it says PC-2 6400? I bought GSkill PC 8500. Is this what they put in or what cpu-z validator recognized? Thanks for the help.

a good day to day speed for a core 2 duo is 2ghz.. or lower. lol for gaming and more a good speed is 3ghz. 4ghz is kind of overkill.. but hell who doesnt want more speed right?

not to hijack the thread or anything though.. it sounds fine to me. @ omega i think he meant the fsb when he said multiplier, and im not sure if hes 100% sure what hes talking about.. considering he had someone else overclock his computer... which is also something i really would NOT do...

Yes, he raised the FSB.
