Easier LAN Connectivity With A Dedicated Computer?

At the last LAN, we had internet trouble which kept going out and stuff.
All I used was a 24 port switch. I was thinking, should I use a dedicated computer, with XP Pro to assign IP's easier and do everything better.

Does the computer need to be dedicated? Or can someone use it/game on it.

Anything that can resolve any issues that may occur?

Thanks.

if i were you

- get me a windows 2003 server.
- run dhcp
- use routing and remote access for internet.
- you can also use it for dedicated servers (the best way to reduce lag).

you would need a bit of time on your hands to get this right. especially if you don't have any experience with windows 2003.

If you want the PC to give out DHCP, then you need a server-based OS. You could buy a router for DHCP, and connect that to the switch.

Will any kind of router work?

And Windows Server is the only option in this case?

I know linux wont work, cause of the games I will be hosting.

Thanks.

windows home server would pe possible to i guess. don't have any experience with it.
And if you're not planning to host any dedicated games on it, you could run a linux server. You could run another desktop to host the dedicated game.
