Easiest way to cool your laptop

What's the easiest way to cool your laptop? I like to take mine with me everywhere, often to places where the only place I can put it is, fittingly, on my lap. The HP I have gets incredibly hot and I was wondering if there was a portable way to cool it without buying a cooling pad which obviously would not work for me.
 
Clean any dust out of it, and if you're dextrous and have the know-how to work with laptop components, apply a better Thermal Paste. That will ease-up the CPU-area temps, but the HDD is another issue. Really, they will generate a lot of heat regardless. Can you balance it on a book or something so it's not directly on your lap and air can still move around it?
