Easy motherboard problem/need help

When I turn it on the motherboard kicks on (fans going etc.) but there is no video and the hard drive is not kicking on. The HD kicks on in another computer but not this one. Would this just be a processor problem or something else on the motherboard? Shold I just buy a new board or just replace the processor? Thank You for any help you can give me.
 
It could be either one or both (one device failing taking out both) but it's usually the motherboard.
The only way to tell which device failed is to try the processor in a different compatible working motherboard. It doesn't have to be new. It could be another compatible PC.
If the processor does not start the other machine, then it's more than likely dead.
The same goes for the suspect motherboard, try a different working but compatible processor in it. If it won't post, then the board is dead.

I was going to do that but that but the computers I have, nethier are compatable with each other. I probably will buy a new board anyways but wanted more info before I do. Anybody have any thoughts on a PCI diagonostic card? Do they work and does the code books give detailed info? Thank you.
 
I bought the computer on Ebay (big mistake) for the kids but when I got it (2 weeks later) and turned it on this is the problem I get. I bought an Asus P4B 1.7ghz mobo to replace this one. So this solves my mobo problem (I hope). It was dirt cheap and the parts from the broken board will transfer right over. Now I do have a question about hard drives. How can I transfer all data from one HD to another (rookie question I know)? So what I want to do is take the HD they have now (4 GB w/Windows 2000 on it) to a 40GB HD with possibly nothing on it. The person I got the comp from Ebay said that Windows XP is on it but who knows so, I want to plan for the worse. Any help because I am sure its easy to do. Thank You.

install an OS on the 40GB hard drive... then put the 4GB hard drive in and make it a slave and transfer the data over.
 
Ok, but if the 40gb has no OS (don't want to buy one eathier) should I install both drives and make the 40gb the 2nd drive (slave) or should I transfer whats on the 4gb to the 40gb, OS and all. Can this be done because I do not have the key # for that OS?
 
no... install OS on 40GB. Make 40GB Master drive... then put the 4GB in and make it slave and then transfer. DON'T TRANSFER OS THAT IS ON THE 4GB HARD DRIVE OVER!!!!!!
 
That's not what he asked cohen. He does not have an O.S. to install. He needs to copy the O.S. from the 4gig to the 40gig.

Do a Google search for MaxBlast software, download it, and then burn the image to a CD.
Set the jumper on the 40gig as slave and connect it to the second connector on the hard drive cable. The 4gig may need to be set as master and it will be connected to the last connector on the hard drive cable. Please be sure to have a newer 40pin/80 conductor hard drive cable to connect the hard drives with. Also be sure to connect power to each drive.
Boot to the MaxBlast CD (you may have to set the CD-ROM as first boot device in the BIOS) and click on the copy disk icon. Follow the prompts to copy from the 4gig to the 40gig hard drive.
When it's done, remove the CD, and shut down.
Remove the 4gig and replace it with the 40gig and set it's jumper to cable select.
Boot the PC.
You may have to reboot several times for it to settle down (driver installations).

Sorry....

well you can not copy and paste to the OS onto a new hard drive... if anything run the OS of the 4GB hard drive and use the 40GB hard drive as the slave for files.... would that work?
 
Thank you Quick and Cohen for the help. This is my first MOBO replace. I hope the 40gb drive has an OS like the seller said but I need to plan for the worse. So as I see it there is 2 ways to do this, I could use the 4gb drive as master w/40gb as slave and the OS will work or I can use that software to transfer all files over to the 40gb drive from the 4gb drive. Please tell me I am finally right. I get the new MOBO today so I want to be ready. Any other fine tips you guys have for when I do this. I am pretty good with computers since I have been using them since 1987. But I never have done a build yet.
 
Hey Quick, I downloaded the MaxtorBlaster and put it on the CD but when I open it, it says that I need a Maxtor Hard drive to use it. I am using a Western Digital for the 40gb and a stock 4gb drive that came with an HP Brio I got years ago. Any other "universal" copying programs I can get elsewhere? Thank You.

Nevermind I downloaded a similar program from Western Digital.
