easy to set up router

I'm wondering if any body could suggest a wireless router that isn't too difficult to setup. I currently have two computer networked through a wired router, and would like to go wireless. I'd like to keep the two PC's connected, and let an Xbox and Ipad connect also. I have a netgear N600, but I plan on taking it back because it is a nightmare to get working, and I still haven't been able to.

does anybody know of anything that is easier? when I set up the wired one, it was a piece of cake. just popped a disk in and everything worked. but this netgear POS can't find the internet, doesn't know if my connection is static, want IP address, mac id, and a bunch of other stuff I have no idea what is. it's telling me if I don't know, to call my cable company. Do you really need to contact your cable provider to set up a router?

A router can be easy to setup, just plug it in and it should work. It will have a default SSID of "netgear" or something like that and have no security enabled so any wireless client can connect. It will also have a default admin user id with default pw.

You don't want to use your router that way. You'll want to enable security and enter a passkey so that only clients that know the passkey can connect. You should change the SSID to something more useful than the default. You should also at least change the admin pw so others can't access the router's settings.

There is lots more you can do to a router's settings but what I described are the basic things that need to be done. Inputting MAC addresses can tighten your security but isn't generally necessary.

If your router and wireless adapters are new enough they may support WPS which is a way to setup the router/adapter by pushing a button on the router and the adapter and they will find each other and configure a secure connection.

I've never needed to contact my ISP to setup a router, shouldn't be necessary.

it definitly isn't working by just plugging it in. when I connect the cable modem to it, then it to my pc (through Ethernet cable) I loose all connection to the internet. when I put the disk in and start to run it, it asks if I have a static or dynamic IP address. I select static (cable access) and then it goes on to setting up the network. after a few seconds, it opens a new widnow asking for 10 or 12 (can't remember which) number dns numbers or something like that. I have no idea what they are, and at the bottom of that window it says if I don't know them, to contact my cable provider. that was using Ethernet cables. I never had any of these issues with my wired router. is it possible the new router is just broken?

WRT54G I just got a used one to replace a broken one all I had to was hook it up no software to install. I like this router it has removable antennas and pretty good range you can get one off ebay & craigslist for like $20 to $30

I noticed by your IP address that you are using comcast internet, which I also have. Unless its different where you are at, all you need to do is shut down your cable modem, connect the router to the modem and then connect pc's to router with cable. Then turn modem on and let it sync up and then turn router on and let it sync up and you should get internet.

its working now, not sure how though. I don't know what kind of modem you have, but I have the Motorola surfboard one with 4 green light (power, receive, send, online) and a amber light for pc activity. usually the amber light blinks, flashes, like the light on the front of the computer. but, while I was having problems with it, it was completely out, like the modem and router were not even connected. I suspect it might be the yellow cable, as the light came on after I fiddled with it. but I don't know if that did it, or it just took awhile to sync up.

one other question. once I finally got the setup to run, it had me name each connection (there were two, one 5ghz and one 2.5 ghz) and assign a password. is there any other security measures I need to take? when I connected to the network with a wireless adapter on another pc, an ipad, and the xbox it asked for a password each time. at least at first, it stored them after initial connection. is that enough?

Then you have the one that comcast gives you. I use linksys routers and all that is required is to hook everything up and its online. There should have been an option on the laptop that should allow you to save the sonnection and start automatically. Then you should never have to enter the info again.
