Easy to use sound recorder

I'm looking for free, easy to use software which will allow me to capture sounds, and save these sounds as an mp3 file. Basically, I want everything that comes out of my speakers to be compiled into a single, easy to use file. If possible, I'd also like to be able to divide these files, i.e. tell my computer to stop recording, compile the file, then automatically begin recording again into a new mp3 file.

I'm not trying to steal anything, so I'd like the software to be free and legal :) .

Thanks in advance for any help.

How do save the file as an mp3? When I force Windows Media Player to open it (by default, it claims it doesn't know how to play the file), I just get silence.

Depends on the program you are using. In Audacity, you record what you want, then hit the Stop button. Then, click File -> Export As Wav, MP3, or Ogg Vorbis.

As far as I recall, Messer saves things as .wavs. You'll need Audacity, MusicMatch, WMP, Nero Wave Editor, etc to convert to mp3.

Don't forget! Whenever you're recording the sounds you hear on your computer, you need to go to the Recording Properties in Control Panel -> Sounds and Audio Devices -> Recording -> Options -> Properties -> Stereo Mix or Wave Out Mix. Make sure the Stereo Mix or Wave out mix is checked, and disable your system sounds, so you don't get the noises your PC makes (like a toilet flush for emptying the Recycle Bin!)
