Personally I would not go with used or refurbished drives. Mechanical drives have a high failure rate compared to other desktop components, and buying used, you have no idea how many hours that drive has been used and what kind of activity it had.I was looking on eBay at the hdd and am wanting to get a extra storage one for around $30.I found a Seagate refurb 750gb and a new hdd of 500gb for around that price range.Never had a refurbished hdd, which should I go with?
For the $20 price difference, you're much better off with the new drive which comes with a 1 yr warranty. Are those Ebay sellers offering any kind of warranty?
Not sure if you would see a difference between SATA II and III. Maybe for some real main like shit, but most stuff you wouldn't notice.

Ebay has its own buyer protection... really not worth any further warranty purchase.
Are you really recommending that someone files a claim with eBay if 6, 12, or 24 months down the road a used drive that you bought fails? You know that means the seller gets that money taken away from them right? It's not a warranty program, it's for items that arrive not as described.Ebay has its own buyer protection... really not worth any further warranty purchase.
Are you talking about eBay buyer protection, or something else?In Australia consumer protection covers purchases even on ebay. We don't need extended warranties - obviously its different there.
If it arrives damaged, that's what either shipping insurance or eBay buyer protection are for. Buying a used ebay drive is worse even without the shipping, just for the fact that you don't know the condition or use of the drive. There is chance that they will not packaging proper. So ordering from Newegg or amazon is better.
Buying a used hard drive is just not a good idea. Period. The price difference is generally not much, as in this case. Unless you know the person, you can never be sure how many hours the drive has on it, how much data has been written, if it has any SMART errors, etc., until you receive it.No, you don't really know me enough. I have always make sure it is quality seller before I paying a hundreds dollar. Know china power supply? They can be dangerous for laptop, iPad, etc.
Great! I'm glad to hear that since you know the possible issues with used drives, that you will buy new or certified refurbished.I work for Relay Protect System, so I knew what could happening if I bought suspect hard drive.
