Ebay Laptop Batteries?

Hi everyone. I haven't posted here in a while but am excited to be back!

I recently bought an entry level HP laptop, it's pretty decent and I am happy with it but I need longer battery life. HP wants $200 for a high capacity 12 cell battery and I don't want to pay $200 so that is not an option. However, I've browsed ebay and noticed that alot of vendors have 12 cell/high capacity batteries that may or may not be OEM branded (i.e. genuine HP batteries).

I'd also be looking into getting a new battery for my dad's laptop because after many years of constant usage the battery in that one died completely. I've noticed Ebay has many batteries for his laptop too.

So, basically, does anyone have any experience with these 3rd party batteries, would it be worth the $60 that they cost (great price compared to the buying from HP). In the back of my mind I almost know that there is no certainty but I really can't argue with the great prices and I really, REALLY could use the extra capacity (I can use the laptop at uni - they have wifi and all that but no power outlets). If anybody can chime in I would definitely appreciate it! :D

They're a mixed bag... Honestly I think you'd be better off getting a standard HP battery if you could. I've tried some knockoff batteries and most of them are junk. One I had for my old Panasonic was supposed to have more mAh and such, but aside from practially not fitting in the camera, the life was about an eighth that of my original battery!

Did you buy the cheapest one you could find? ;)
Try to find some midrange priced ones. the cheapest ones are always junk. or you could try some auctions on ebay. Only auctions from people, not online stores etc. usually they are cheap quality

Since your laptop is new I would only recommend a new OEM battery. Ok to get a 3rd party one for your Dad's old machine.

if you want a good battery for the laptop, the one you choose should not the cheapest.A good battery is worth the higher money paid.isn't,it?
Be careful next time.

Be careful for what? he hasn't bought the battery. Which is why he is posting here because he wont's to know if it is worth it.

You should really read the post more carefully.

My advice buy the OEM or maybe find a third party battery that you can find some good reviews on.

just another thought.

1) i have nothing against buying at ebay. for sure i would look at the battery that is oem and find out what kind. NMH or Ion (same a cell phone)

2) If ebay then request new and unopen.

3) Read the instructions for the laptop battery from the supplier. Ive seen many people including my family exhaust the battery to nothing or boil the battery because they did not read the instructions carefully. leave it on the charger for ever with no relief unless you have a smart charger.

4) Open a paypal account and keep it separate from your personal checking account. a separate savings account just for ebay. if your unhappy you can get it off usually.

5) As mentioned.........compare and benchmark the manufacture of the battery on ebay. who's happy and not happy.

hope this might help a little.

I haven't had a problem with eBay batteries. I've had them for my cameras and camcorders and there haven't been any problems, sure they are cheaper feeling and don't last as long, but for the price you are paying it's well worth it.

ive never had a problem with ebay, as far as batteries, laptop chargers or ne thing. Ive bought batteries for 5 dollars for psp that work just as good as the original, my old toshiba i had i repleced the battery with one from ebay and it worked great. Same with laptop chargers why pay 50-100 bucks for an oem when you can get one from ebay for 10-20 bucks that work just as good i just replaced my aunts acer charger with 13 dollar one from ebay and it works great
