Ecc Ram????

My boss is ordering a custom DELL system and in the RAM options you can get ECC (Error correcting code) memory or non ECC. Is this a DELL scheme to rip off people who don't know any better? I have never heard of such a thing. Whats the deal, help please. Thanks.
 
ECC RAM is better because it prevents page faults from the RAM itself, you see servers running ECC memory and it is a but load more money. There is also unbuffered ECC and Fully Buffered ECC.

Check out wikipedia or google for all the differences. Its been around for a while, so it is not a Dell only technology nor is it a scheme.
 
Thanks i told him to go with the ECC ram.

Why is there no spec for this in retail sites like Newegg? Does the RAM have it regularly, does it not? Thanks

Fully buffered ECC RAM is ungodly expensive compared to consumer ram. Also, consumer computers never handle tons of multiple tasks at once that would require ECC memory. You mostly see it on servers.
 
What you should know however is that ECC RAM is more for servers and machines that require that extra level of stability. Non-ECC RAM is faster and cheaper, so if he's just using it for a normal desktop, then get the Non-ECC.
 
i used to have an old amd dual 2.4 cpu server it had 2gig of registrered ecc ram-

was very stable but slow, if you look about on google you will find some information on this ram, it mentions something about error correction and the fact that it slows down the ram...

i would advise to stick to normal ram unless you are gonna run a server
