electrical interference

I have started to notice a loud "pop" in my computer speakers when a nearby light is switched on. I hear the same noise when the washing machine cycles on at the far end of the house (different circuit). As far as I can tell there is no effect on the computer itself or the monitor when the noise occurs.
The computer is connected to a surge supressor strip.

I have not added any new hardware, nor have I done any rewiring in the house. How do I track down what is causing this noise?
Thanks for your help.

this could be a number of things from dirty power, to a loose connection
is the nearby light on the same ciruit as the computer or the washer ?
by code the washer should be on a deicated circuit.

do any lights dim when the washer or frig comes on if so have you ever noticed this before ?
i would start looking for a loose netural in the breaker box and then check that all the hot wires and breakers have a good connection, i would check to see if the breakers that the computer and washer are on are not getting week by replacing them most of your branch circuit breaker are 20amp you can get them for under $10 each. ONLY REPLACE A BREAKER WITH THE SAME SIZE YOU TAKE OUT.
it could also be a bad connection at the serive drop from the util company.
