Email problem--Want to get hotmail to come through Thunderbird

Okay, here's my problem. I have a Hotmail email account, and I'd like to access through my Mozilla Thunderbird. I understand how to go to “tools,” “account options,” and typing in my server name. I just don't know what server name will allow me to get the mail. On the other hand, does this just not work because Hotmail is a web-based email system? Any input will be helpful. If it makes any difference, I'm running Windows XP Pro.

Hello,

As other web based email services, Hotmail is using the HTTP protocol for connecting you to your mailbox. If you want to send and receive Hotmail emails using an email client software, then your software must support Hotmail HTTP access for your email account. Some email clients, such as Outlook Express or Microsoft Outlook, offer builtin support for Hotmail accounts, so you only have to select HTTP when you are asked to select your email account type and select Hotmail as the HTTP Mail Service Provider.

In order for your Thunderbird to be able to read your Hotmail (and some other popular web-based email providers like Yahoo, Gmail, etc.) you simply need to download and install an 'extension' called 'WebMail'. It can be found at Thundebird-creator's webpage:

http://webmail.mozdev.org/installation.h…

Installation-instructions can be found at the bottom of the page mentioned above. Further settings for your accounts (like Account Setup, Server Settings, etc.) can be found at the menu on the left.

Okay, thanks, this has been very helpful. I'm just not sure what variation of “Hotmail” to type in as my server. The page didn't seem to say much about that. Any more help in that area? Thanks.

P.S. How do I get rid of the advertisement that appeared on the bottom of my post above? I had nothing to do with it getting there, and would like to remove it.

You can't. Because you used the word "thunderxxxx" in your post thats the reason for the advertisement. This website is somewhat ad based so it can receive money to continue to operate.

uhm.. now the ad changed. go figure.

When I go to “Get Mail” my Thunderbird also says, after a few minutes, that the connection timed out. How do I fix this? I realize that being on a dial-up internet connection as I am will slow things down somewhat.

You cannot use mozilla thunderbird with hotmail if i remember right, as hotmail is not pop based, and is web only. There may be a plugin to get around that though, but im not sure..
