The short story is COX has screw my email up and can't even get it on my phone. I will go to AT&T after I move but my question is would it be better to use gmail so no matter where I go or what provider I use I will have only one main email for life?

Yes. Gmail is far superior than any ISP's email service.

When I change ISP providers they will ask what email address I want to use so I guess I should accept their email address and use is for junk email like sending an email to ask questions about pots and pans and so far and the Gmail would be my main email?

I have an ISP email address, but it was setup years and years ago when my parents first got high speed internet (so I did not set it up). I used it until I got into college, at which point I switched to gmail and just have my ISP email address forward anything that goes there to me.
