Employee Discount

Heres a question...hope this beloings here :)

I recently got hired at Best Buy (I know, I know...I just wanted to have a little somethin to do over the summer and to help pay for some school.) I haven't started yet, but apparently the employee discount is 5% over the stock price (what they pay.) Does anyone know a source where I could find these prices or how they compare to actual computer parts? For example, say I want an 8800gtx...obviously the discount is substantial, but how much are we talking here? Any info would be appreciated.

you would first need to find out who their suppliers are, i don't think thats easy to find on the internet. the easiest thing to do would probably be to wait until you get the job then ask how much it is then multiply whatever the price is by 0.95 to get the stock price

You mean multiply the store price by .95? That would just be 5% percent off the BB price, not necessarily the stock price. And if you meant multiply that by the stock price, that would still be 5% off, not 5% more. After I find out the stock price I'd have to multiply that by 1.05 to see what I'd have to pay. And yeah, I have no idea who their suppliers are.

sorry, misread the question :) its probably cheaper on newegg or ebay anyway, but i dont think they will disclose who they buy from anyway, but you can search google for big suppliers and get an idea of what factory prices are anyhow

Hah, I don't think so. I've heard Best Buy discounts are killer, but they have strict rules, you'll be fired immediately if it's found that you buy anything not for your own use.

Computer items normally have super high mark up value, meaning they'll buy, say a stick of RAM for $10 and then mark it up to $40. %5 over stock prices means that you'll get that stick of RAM that goes for $40 retail for only $10.50

However, last time I checked, Best Buy didn't carry the 8800GTX, only the GTS, although that was a little bit ago that I checked. I thought about putting in an application and working there for a while just so I could get a good deal on a laptop.

Well yeah, I wouldn't use it for anyone else aside from myself. I was thinking the same thing though, that computer components might be pretty cheap if I bought through them. I dunno, we'll see. Maybe I'll update this with my prices.

All you do is multiply the price BB pays by 1.05 to find what you would pay.

I dont think you could find the prices out online, but once you get the job you can probably ask. I believe it's actually pretty cheap though.

I worked for Future Shop up here in Canada (which is owned by Best Buy Canada), and I recall once buying an item with my discount (which is 10% above stock cost here), and it ended up costing me more then what it was listed for to the regular consumer. I never brought it up as it was only a few bucks but I would think they should have some sort of safeguard in their systems on things like that.

However, as mentioned Best Buy is not likely to divulge such information as to whom they purchase from unfortunately. If they do, then consider yourself lucky, lol.

One thing that I know is that you can get top grade batteries for dirt cheap. Those packs of 20+ batteries only cost best buy a couple of bucks, the mark up is huge.

best buy are too expensive if i have to use any type of instore purchases (which is rare) i opt for circuit city first. Apparently we all need jobs at newegg for their discounts :P
