Enable Gmail account in Thunderbird

I am trying to enable my Gmail account in thunderbird, but it does not go connect. I'm not sure how to set it up exactly. Could someone tell me what settings I need to use, and how to get it to work. Thanks,

you talk as if it is ONLY thunderbird that can sync and send/recieve with gmail. Outlook 200 onwards and Outlook Express 5 onwards also supports gmail.

That is true, and while I use both, I personally prefer Thunderbird.
