Enabling GDM, KDE on Ubuntu & other questions

How do I enable Gnome Display Manager on Ubuntu? I installed KDE4 and set KDM as the default display manager, now when it boots up it boots with the Kubuntu splash, loads up the Kubuntu login screen. I can choose Gnome as the session type which brings me to my "normal", GNOME installation, but Sleep and Shut Down options have disappeared and Switch User doesn't work anymore, haven't tried Logging Out yet. Is there any disadvantage to using both (I think KDE is so much cooler than Gnome, but am having trouble getting everything set up properly under my KDE setup)? If I enable GDM, will my KDE installation start acting up on me? Is it possible/advisable to have both active at the same time? Any other suggestions/advice regarding this... would it be better to dual-boot Ubuntu and Kubuntu rather than morphing...?

If I decide to setup some kind of dual-or-more-boot system, would it be beneficial/harmful in any way to have them share a home folder?
 
Update:

Logoff works.

Switch User gives two error messages, first one yapping about GDM not being enabled and the second one was something along the lines "Operation can't be executed" or "Incorrect operation" or something...

If I want to shutdown or go to sleep, I have to logoff to get to the KDE login screen where I have the option to shut down, go to sleep and everything else.
 
There is a distribution of Ubuntu called Kubuntu. It's in fact Ubuntu with KDE desktop.

The problem still: When I choose "GNOME" at login as my session type, "sleep" option doesn't appear and "switch user" option won't work. When I choose KDE4 as the session type, it works fine, which really is no problem because I like KDE better than GNOME, but still...

And I'd aslo like my other questions answered, thankke-youuu ;)
 
Last bump. I'll just wait for Imsati to come around and post why he has both Ubuntu and Kubuntu installed, also highlighting advantages of doing so, and disadvantages of morphing ;)
 
Sorry I have no answers for you either. But I'm currently downloading Kubuntu 8.10.
About 2 minutes before reading this thread i PM'd Imsati and asked him about the difference between Kubuntu and Ubuntu haha.
Anyway, consider this a free bump :)

It's not out yet, is it? Did you mean 8.04 or 7.10? AFAIK the version number is "year.month", so 8.10 won't be out until... october?

The only difference between Ubuntu and Kubuntu AFAIK is that Kubuntu uses KDE desktop while Ubuntu comes with Gnome.
 
Just do: sudo dpkg-reconfigure gdm, then choose gdm, reboot your computer and that's all ;)
KDE 4.1 is better, faster, more modern than GNOME but, isn't stable enough for me. Morphing is a good idea, but if you know what you are doing.
