Enabling graphic drivers in Gutsy?

In Ubuntu Gutsy, I've installed the latest nVidia drivers from off of their site using the root method and have also changed the xorg.conf file accordingly but it still says I'm not using the driver. Do I need to activate it under the Restricted Drivers Manager or will that just install nvidia-glx-new?
 
Yes, you need to enable them via Restricted Drivers. There should be a pop-up notification; if not, simply open up the Restricted Drivers from the Task panel.
 
Once I did that, it started loading nvidia-glx-new which I don't want because I just loaded the newest driver straight from nVidia.

Right now, I can't even get into to X because all I get is a graphical effed-up screen.
 
IIRC, those driver installs are just shell scripts that run as a wizard to connect and download the right linux build driver for your system.

Did you download and install the newest from from Nvidia's website?
 
It's not that, but the past few times I've tried to install the drivers, my graphics will get completely efffed up on start up (picture a screen from a dead video card) and I can only work in root.

It is. Starting with 7.04, all the nvidia-guesswork on the user's end was taken out and the process automated. No more playing 'guess the driver' - the Restricted Package script reads your card's info and fetches the right one. Sometimes (rarely), though, further configuration of X is needed by the user, it seems.

@ BB_T, are you getting an error message when X tries to load? Also, you may want to try using Envy (http://www.albertomilone.com/nvidia_scripts1.html). Unsupported, but many folks swear by it. Also, in /etc/X11/xorg.conf, does it list 'nv' or 'nvidia'? It's been a while since I've had to manually play with it, but I think all the 'nv' should be 'nvidia'.
 
What's the current version then through nvidia-glx-new? I've been trying to install 171.09....

Also, is there any commend to reset the graphic options to default values or enter safe graphics mode? I get a screen of full of BS everytime i load X........

I have no idea what the version number is. It's also bee a while since I've installed an Ubuntu system.

Again, are you getting an error message? What does the 'screen full of BS' say, exactly? Are you able to get to a command prompt since X will not load? If so try these commands, in this order...
sudo apt-get install nvidia-glx

The above will install (according to what Ubuntu says your hardware needs) the proper drivers, tell your system to use these drivers, and reboot the system to load with the new changes. If you wish to have a control panel once your GUI is up and running, open a terminal and type:
sudo apt-get install nvidia-settings

Hmmm, that's odd. Usually in cases like this, X will try to start twice, then give a failure error and default to a command prompt.

have you tried going into recovery mode from the GRUB menu?
