Entering D drive lags my PC

Hello everyone!

I have the following problem. Whenever i go to my D drive my PC slows down and periodically freezes for some time until i get out of D. This happens when i go My Computer -> D drive. There is no problem if i use WExplorer to get into D. Can you tell me what is wrong? Thank you!
 
Is the D drive an ide model while the OS/boot drive is a sata model? Or is D an external usb drive?

Here for browsing multiple drives I simply create a desktop shortcut of Windows Explorer by right clicking on the item in Start>Programs>Accessories to save steps.

Going through the MyComputer or Computer in Vista icon seems to drag if you are seeing an explorer.exe or other system related problem. If the second drive itself is starting to see wear and possibly failing on you that would be one thing to consider as well.
