epson printer problem

we have an epson C80 for my dads pc and its playing up. when you turn it on now the two main lights on top flash red and the printer doesnt go through its normal warm up routine.....any ideas?
 
Are you able to get it to do any diagnostic stuff at all? I'd assume that the control chip is bad in it or something to that effect, and the printer's probably dead... Did you have a thunderstorm near the house recently?

Look through the manual if you have it there and go through the troubleshooting section. It may be simply be "out of ink" in one or more cartridges if nothing went on it. The review seen at the link there has a few rather highly critical remarks to say on that model.
 
definately not the ink, and sadly cant get into the diagnostics either, had a feeling it might be dead and as is usually the case with older printers its cheaper to replace than repair. Time to have a look around then...cheers :)
 
I don't worry about printers here anymore. By the time the first cartridge is used up I'm already looking at a newer model. :P On the newer HP models you would see an amber not red light when the ink is either used up or you have a paper jam. Then it will simply keep flashing there.
 
Just be careful when you're buying a new printer (if that's what you're going to do...), make sure that you are getting a printer not only with good quality, but also with good cost per page. No offense PC Eye, but one of the biggest problems I have with HP is not the quality of their printers, but the amount that you spend on ink and the printer. If you don't spend a pretty good amount on the printer, youo can rest assured that you will be spending it on the ink for that printer...
 
A laser printer is the best in the long run, due to cost per page, but you're looking at over $300 probably for a decent color laser printer. =/
 
I couldn't imagine spending $30 on an HP #28 cartridge. But I don't respond to the spam ads for ordering cheap printer cartridges online either. Lexmark and Cannon are two other popular brands. The thing to mention here was not the cost but how long it took for a cartridge to dry up. The one in the HP Deskjet 3520 model stuffed on a shelf here lasted for over a year. Anyone for green colored text? :P
 
inks not really an issue, compute fair near me sells the inks at cracking prices, not gonna get anything amazing as the printer is just for menial tasks :)
 
Well the HP here was only intended for the "occasional" but rare printout of one thing or another. I was impressed by the amount of time that could go by and the lower amount of ink used for some good prints. The printer that came before that one was the model that chewed through catridges like crazy.

When trying a few printouts of screen shots from HL2 that's when the level dropped fast there. Yet the green color keeps going and going. Well that's mainly due to not having bothered to buy a replacement quite yet. When I have some things to print hard copies of and have a chance another one will go in.
