how can i totally erase everything? i have the windows xp disk that came with my computer so i dont have to worry about that but i wanan totally wipe my entire computer!!

Format it. If you want to put XP again on it just do a regular installation, in one of the first screens it will ask you to press 'd' if you want to delete that partition, press 'd'. Then continue your install. Everything will be lost, and you will have your operating system installed as it was when the computer was new.

Well, when you press the 'd' key to delete the partition it means it will delete all the information in your hard drive and therefore format your computer. If you've never installed an operating system I would recommend you to have a friend or someone who has done it before helping you out. It's very easy though, just put your XP CD in your cdrom, restart the computer and it will start from the CD, it will start recognizing all the hardware, then it will guide you through the installation, like I said, at some point in one of the first screens it will ask you if you want to use that partition or not, if not, hit 'd', deleting the partition, then you have to create a new one, all the instrucions are given through the installation.

i still dont know wat aprtition and stuff i dont know how to do dat lol
if u got time a step by step process would help

( o and wen i run my windows xp cd and try to click install windows xp i get this things saying "Setup cannot continue because the version of Windows on your computer is newer than the version on the CD.

Warning: If you decide to delete the newer version of Windows that is currently installed on your computer, the files and settings cannot be recovered."

but i cannot click continue it wond let me only cancel and details

put the CD in and reboot your machine

and then follow the instructions
when it asks to reformat then do a full reformat not a quick format

Did you set the CD-ROM to boot first in the boot order in BIOS?

unless someone is willing to write up a tutorial, you will not find much help using forums.

You have to find out yourself, do more research and actually try before asking questions. You have to have the will to educate yourself, otherwise just find someone who is more interested to do the job for you.

Mikey:

When you boot your computer, go into the bios by pressing the key that it will tell you to. (what computer do you have?) Look for boot order, and set it to floppy, cd, harddrive in that order. Reboot with the CD in, and a screen should come up saying "press any key to boot from CD" Press the any key. You should get a black or blue screen that says Windows XP setup. Follow the directions until you get to a screen that asks where you want to install Windows. You should see a table at the bottom of the screen. Using the arrow keys, select the current windows partition and press d.(and possibly enter and L) Then it will go back to the previous screen, and in the box it will say unpartitioned space ******MB. Select that and press the c key to create a partition and just leave it at the preset size. Then install Windows on that partition, it will be formatted (don't do quick format) and windows will boot and you will go through all the setup of XP.

Or, if you do not get the "press any key to boot from cd" message, go into windows explorer, insert a blank floppy, right click on the floppy drive icon, click format, then click "create an MS-DOS startup disk," then click OK. After it is formatted, reboot the computer leaving the floppy dick in the drive. When your computer boots, dos should come up. Type "format c:" (no quotes) and the c drive should be formatted. Reboot the computer (ctrl-alt-del in dos), take out the floppy and insert the windows CD. If the "press any key to boot from cd" message does not come up, then you have some other problem that I cannot solve without knowing more.

Good luck

Tim
