Erasing and formating OS hard drive

I put a new hard drive in my pc and want to erase my 500gb for media storage. Im now using a partitioned 1tb WD green HD, and want to erase my old one. i'm running vista ultimate 64 bit. My problem is, i can't get the old drive to format, or erase or anything because of the old vista operating system on it. ive tried everything i can find, but it's still a no go. Can anyone help with this issue as it is driving me nuts. thanks
 
OK Very easy. Boot the operating system in safe mode and format it from there. OR alternatly use a programs such as partition magic 8. Or use windows VISTA setup to format for you but dont install the OS on it.

Are you an administrator because sometimes user profiles can stop you doing things like this.

Do you get an error message saying its in use or you have permissions? more info would be helpful
