Eratic operation

When I start a program the mouse acts Erratically or when I start the computer the windows music stops and starts, does anybody know what this could be?

defrag and run virus and spyware checks, could also be hardware if it's an older computer (or new I guess, more likely old though), see if the first two help though

And if you have limited ram it may be that that you have too many backround processes running.
