Error during POST

I could not get my cd rom to open up today, so i went into the device manager to turn it off (disable) and back on to see if would start back working before I removed it. While it was in the middle of the disable we had a power-outage in the neighborhood.

Now when I start the computer I get the following message at the end of POST:

verifying DMI pool data.............................

a disk read error occurred
press ctrl + alt + del to restart

When i preform the restart it does the same thing.

What do I need to do to get this back up and running.

Here is my specs. please let me know what other information you need to help me solve this problem.

Gigabyte ma785gm-us2h motherboard
4 gigs of ram
ADM Athlon II x2 240 processor
windows 7 64-bit

Make sure you don't have any thumb drives or memory cards plugged in and try again.
If that doesn't work try resetting your BIOS to optimal settings.

tried setting bios to optimal settings and that did not work.

I do have an option to load fail safe setting also in bios if that will work.

If the cdrom drive doesn't open, then you need to replace it. No amount of resetting cmos or anything like that will bring it back to life. You can get one for less than $20. However, has the power outage killed the hard drive?

The cdrom is not my main concern at the moment, the disk read error I am getting during POST is my problem.

If the power outage hurt the hard drive, how do I go about checking it?

It's most likely toast since the system doesn't even recognize it. You can try the drive in another system to see what happens. What brand of drive is it?

I have seagate hard drives one is a 320gb and one is a 500gb. The 320gb is the one that has my os on it.

BIOS does recognize that I have two hard drives installed.

One thing that I noticed is ever since I reset the bios to optimal settings, I am now getting the following message at the start of POST.

SATA is running at IDE mode

*********************************************
Setup option is available to set SATA to AHCI
Now is IDE mode, the system can not support Hot Plug
Would you change the mode?
*********************************************
Do you want BIOS to enable this option for you?

Yes, when you reset the cmos its reverts all the settings back to factory. So if you had ahci enabled you need to reenable it. The bios may recognize the drive but if system is unstable/slow booting with it plugged in then there is nothing you can do.

I do not know what AHCI is, so I don't know if it was enabled or not but I take it that reenabling it will not solve my problem.

ok, so what are my choices to get my pc back up and running?

At what stage are you at now?

Does the system boot to windows? As long as windows isn't installed on the drive that is bad then disconnect it from the system and we will deal with the windows drive only.

Well, it just so happens that windows and all of my other programs was installed on that drive. The other drive (500gb) i was just using as a storage drive for my files,pics,etc.....

Sorry, forgive me for double checking here... So windows was installed on the drive that is having issues now? You can download and create a seatools for dos bootable cd and try testing the drive.

Follow the guide here.

http://www.computerforum.com/211596-list-hard-drive-diagnostic-utilities-test-your-drive.html

Since my pc will not boot to windows because of the disk read error, I am assuming that the problem is with the hard drive that has windows installed on it.

I will try to get the seatools test downloaded to a cd tonight when I get home from work and get the drive tested. I will post the results when I have them.

What should I be looking for when running the seatools test?

The problem will be if the software can detect the drive or not. If it can then run the extended test and let it go. It will tell you if repairs are possible or if drive is trashed.

ok, I got the seatools program burned to a disk. Put it in the cd-rom and set bios to boot the cd-rom first.

The first time I tried to boot my computer it got to the same place in POST and gave me this message:

verifying DMI pool data.............................

Boot from cd-rom

a disk read error occurred
press ctrl + alt + del to restart

I went back into bios to make sure I was booting the cd-rom first and restarted again.

This time I got through POST and it said Loading windows files and then I got the following message in the Windows Boot Manager:

Loading windows files

Windows has encountered a problem communicating with a device connected to your computer. This error can be caused by unplugging a removable device such as an external usb drive while the device is in use or by faulty hardware such as a hard drive or cd-rom drive that is failing. Make sure any removable storage is properly connected and then restart your computer.

If you continue to receive this error message contact the hardware manufacturer.

Status: 0xc00000e9

Info: An unexpected I/O error has occurred

It gives me the choice to continue or restart at the bottom of the screen.

I tried the continue and it done the same thing.

Unplug the data and power cables from the hard drive and turn machine on and see how far it gets. You should get an error message saying like insert bootable media and restart or something of that nature. I'm assuming at this point its a hard drive issue but could be motherboard as well.

After unplugging the hard drive in question, I did end up getting the following message at the end of POST:

BOOT DISK FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER

Sounds like you have a bad hard drive then. And I doubt you'll be able to repair it if issues happens once its attached to a system.
