Error on DCPromo when retiring old DC

Hopefully someone here has experience w/ DCs - I'm running into an error I can't seem to find much info on while searching google. I find a lot of info on invalid username or password, but not on this specific error.

On the new DC we have DHCP, DNS, and AD running
On the old, DHCP is deactivated so it is only running DNS and AD currently.
Both are on the same subnet - we have multiple subnets.

I'm getting the following error when running DCPromo on the old:

The operation failed because: Managing the network session with <newDC> failed
"Access is denied."

Then asking me to specify an account w/ Enterprise Admin privileges to the forest.

Thanks to anyone who can help.

First a few questions:
- What windows version?
- DC's are up to date?

Second would be to take a look in your event viewer. Take any related errors and throw them in this search engine.

As a last resort you could always manually remove the damn thing using adsiedit. Not supported though and you'd better know what you're doing...

Old DC is w2k

Are they up to date as in synched? or as in updates. They are all up to date as far as replication is concerned. As far as updates... psh most likely not.

This is a long overdue upgrade for the DC - it's running on a dell PC not even a server. We're basically throwing it in the garbage when we demote it. The event log is quite a mess. I'll have to look into it. A lot of errors re: group policy
