error running exe's

Im having a major problem running many of the apps on my computer. Basically when i try to run certain programmes a dos style box appears with the filename of the programme asa the header and then shuts.....

any ideas what could be wrong??????

What type of applications are you trying to run? Try reinstalling one of the programs to test and see if that makes a difference
