SOLVED!!! Error trying to open shared folder on network

Help! My home network will not let me see the shares on my old computer.

I have two XP desktop computers cabled to a wireless router which is cabled to a DSL modem. I setup a home workgroup using the Network Wizard, but I am unable to share the files/folders that exist on my old computer from my new computer no matter what I try. Of course, the old computer can see the new computer shares just fine. I can ping each computer from the other computer. But I get a "not enough permissions/insufficient server space" type of error when I try to connect to a shared folder on the old computer.

I have enabled every sharing capability I can think of on the old computer's share folders and even the root drive, nogo. I have turned off the Windows firewall and uninstalled Norton, nogo. I have sacrificed a chicken on a full moon, nogo.

Thanks for any and all help!

Are both computers on the same workgroup? Have you enabled file and printer sharing?

To join a computer to a workgroup, right click My computer and under Computer Name click change at the bottom and type the name of your workgroup.

To enable file and printer sharing you have to go to start / control panel / network connections / right click on your connection and click on properties / click on File and printer sharing for Microsoft windows and click on Install. Click the check box for service then click add.

Thanks Richie. I've tried everything you mentioned except installing file and print sharing. I just assumed it was installed already since it was listed. I'll try that when I get off work tonight.

Still nogo

I installed File and Print sharing client and service, nogo. I reset the TCP stack. I even disconnected from the router and tried a crossover cable between the two desktops, with no connections to the router or modem. NOGO! The old computer can open the shared files from the new computer, but the new computer cannot open the shared files from the old computer. I also added irpstack to the registry of the new computer without success. I really hate to reinstall the OS just to get a clean environment, but I'm getting desperate. It must be something on the old computer that is not releasing the shared folders to be seen.

lol @ sacrificing a chicken on a full moon.

What happens when you go on your new computer, click start> run and type \\192.168.1.1\sharename (replace the ip with the ip of the old pc and the sharename with the folder your trying to share)

Tell me exactly what error your getting, it sounds to me like a user permissions error of some kind.

Here's the error:

"\\192.168.1.3\files is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. Not enough server storage is available to process this command."

Solved!

SOLVED! It was a combination of two things. I had to add the group 'Everyone' to the security tab of each shared folder, and I also had to increase the IRPStacksize from 12 to 15.

I now have a working network:-)

Thank you for your help!
