ok. my brothers computer just randomly started freezing and when he starts it up an error occurs and asks if he wants to send it to microsoft. any ideas on what this could be about? i was doing it before nad we reformatted it after it started and now its doing it again. really weird.

That could easily be the result of many things including hardware problems like overheating or memory faults now being seen. Is that being seen on a prebuilt or custom made system? Driver conflicts can see system locks at times. Reinstallation of a problem software or drivers could have been seen there.

its a hp presario. its pretty old but really reliable up until now. spyware and virus' arent the problem. we have 2 of each on his system and they turn up nothing. we just took the casing off of it yesterday and swept it out. it was quite dusty. and we swept all the fans too. right now im running the error checking scan on the hard drive. so ill see what all turns up. he's getting a hp a1473w media center. are those pretty good systems? he wants the most he can get for under 400 in a tower. heres the specs

he's going to order it off ebay for 430$ or would it be better to build a system? just let me know what all of you think. he's mostly into music, internet and messengers. and he wants something with pretty nice graphics too.

does that look like the best for the price? he's also liking that feature about recording off the tv and stuff with it.

did you say 2 of each? i heard it isn't a good idea to run two antivirus programs at the same time. pick one and remove the other. that very well may be the problem.

So you ended up blowing a mountain of dust and debris out of an older case on a system where the system registry itself is cluttered. The hard drive probably hasn't been defragmented in a long time. The system specifications on the HP model at the link are the bare essentials for a DDR2 system. To build a good budget case will top the price but see a far performance value. You will note the software package included. Cyberlink's PowerDVD is a great media player for both audio and video as well as dvd playback.

The hardwares are what lack to some degree there. 1gb of ram says a little more then most prebuilt systems seeing 256mb or 512mb as a rule. The read time for cds on the dvd-r/rw drive are sssslowwww however. A Lite-On or another updated model would see 52x as a rule. Building and maintaining a system is another matter. For someone that has help and wants to learn the rest that can see a good system put together for a reasonable price even if it is a bit higher buying hardwares and softwares separately.
